Is consent enough? What the research on normative heterosexuality and sexual violence tells us

In this paper, I first critically review previous research on normative heterosexuality and its intersections with sexual violence to demonstrate that the common focus consent in Western justice politics, sexuality education, prevention is inadequate for defining promoting ethical sex preventing violence. particular, a allows men (a) hold women responsible communicating (non)consent; (b) define conditions of interactions; (c) achieve through coercion; (d) accept “yes” as unfettered consent; (e) minimize justify then articulate an alternative view moves beyond centers care, empathy, co-determination, ongoing communication attention, highlight importance social norms gender transformative approaches prevention.
